Health

As with all beings, health is a really important issue and this breed is no exception. The chinese crested was almost extinct a few decades ago and breeders were  forced to breed between relatives to help save them from extinction, but by doing this they also aided in the creation of genetic defects and diseases. Here, I'll talk about the Chinese Crested's health in general, from acne, pimples and alergies to the breed's common diseases.

 ACNE

Just like humans, some cresteds may develop acnč, pimples or black heads when young, but as they grow it will recede. Other Cresteds may have this

problem for their whole lives, some stop with this all by themselves, others need treatment. There are products that treat this problem, never the less it dries

out their skin. There are also some "home made" treatments (for those with little acne), like mixing olive oil and sugar (giovanna suedan's (Atle Tzontli) tip)

and rubbing the skin with this mixture, this will help treat the problem, plus it will moisturize the skin.

When my hairless kids have acne, I just bath them more often, using facial soap bars in their skin and rubbing with an exfoliant sponge, I avoid oil creams,

since they help acne's aparition. Many  females get acne when they are in heat or pregnant. Just as in humans, it will depend on how much acne the dog has,

to decide which treatment to use. But try not to use medicine if your dog has little acne.

 ALLERGIES

Allergies are also very common in hairless dogs. Some live their whole lives without having a single allergic reaction while others are very sensitive. The main

causes for allergies are fabrics (wool, for examble), plastics, food and strong chemical products (hair removal creams, perfumes, shampoos, house cleaning

chemicals, etc). The most common types of allergic reactions are skin irritation, rashes and hair loss. It is important to identify the cause of the allergy to avoid

future problems; talk to your vet. and let him tell you which treatment to follow.

You must be careful with sweaters; you need to know what material it is made of and you have to be careful not to leave it on for a long time if it's not cold;

Chinese cresteds sweat, and sweat irritates the skin. You also have to be very careful with the sun, because cresteds' skin can burn. It's always healthy to get

a little sun, but it is recomended to always apply spf 50 sun block, as a minimum. This will help them get a little tan, which makes dark skin look more beautiful

and will help the dog produce the vitamins it needs, without risk of getting burn. Darks skinned cresteds are not very sensitive but you must be EXTREMELY

careful with light skinned cresteds.

COMMON DISEASES

Common Diseases in this breed are:          -In the eyes: Glaucoma and PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy).

-Other: Patellars, LCP, deafness (due to closed ear canals), among others.

Common tests done in the Chinese Crested are: CERF, OFA, BAER, PRCD some breeders also make the genetic exam OPTIGEN.
